DOWLING WINS SEASON OPENER OVER STAC WITH A 19-1 FINAL

  The Women's Lacrosse team would win their 2010 opener with a resounding 19-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College this Tuesday.  Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY) and Kimberly Harrington (North Babylong, NY) would lead both teams with three goals a piece. 

Dowling got on the scoreboard first on the afternoon, tallying the game's opening goal just 11 seconds into the contest. Rachel Nelson (New Hyde Park, NY) scored the first goal of her collegiate career off a feed from Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, NY) for a 1-0 Golden Lions lead.

An onslaught of goals would follow, as Dowling scored six goals in the first ten minutes of action, and the first ten of the contest overall. Cotter and Cronin were both key figures as the Golden Lions built up their lead, scoring two goals apiece.

Johannah Mitchell of St. Thomas Aquinas would stop the run of Dowling goals, scoring on a free position shot to cut the deficit to 10-1. Anabel Lopez (Freeport, NY) found the back of the cage with 30 seconds left in the half to give the Golden Lions an 11-1 margin heading into the break.

In the second half, Dowling outscored the Spartans 9-0, including the first goals in a Dowling uniform from Jenifer Olin (Oceanside, NY), Alicia Sanchez (Medford, NY), and Kate Collins (North Caldwell, NJ) to cruise to the 19-1 victory.

Harrington and Cronin both led the way with 3 goals, while Cronin also added an assist. Stephanie Cotter also had a strong game with 2 goals and 2 assists.

Dowling will be back in action on Saturday at 11:00 AM at Golden Lions Field against Georgian Court University.
