Brookhaven, NY - The Dowling Baseball team took a 9-3 decision over the Dominican College Chargers at Golden Lions Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Lions improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Chargers drop to a 3-3 record on the young season.
After scoring just 11 runs in their first four games of the season, Dowling's bats awoke to score 9 against fellow 2009 NCAA Tournament Participant, Dominican.
After a scoreless first inning, Dowling would jump on the board first by pushing across 3 runs in the bottom of the second.
Daniel Pembroke (Shoreham - Wading River, NY) led off the inning with a single and was followed by a
Ralph Tufano (Staten Island, NY) double to put runners on second and third.
Freshman designated hitter
Joe Candela (East Quoge, NY) knocked in the first run with an RBI ground out, while
Tufano then came around to score on a
Taylor Bargiacchi (Chester, NJ) RBI single. The Golden Lions' last run in the frame came across on a throwing error.
Dowling tacked on to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Pembroke,
Tufano, and
Candela would be in the thick of things once again.With two outs a
Pembroke single prolonged the inning, allowing
Tufano to double once again to knock in
Pembroke.
Candela then grounded to short, but a fielding error allowed
Tufano to come around for a 5-0 Dowling lead.
In the top of the 6th and the score 6-1 in Dowling's favor, Domincan would attempt to make things interesting. The Chargers pushed across two runs on a Mario Lopez RBI single and a Jose Padilla RBI ground out to cut the lead to 6-3.
Dowling extended their cushion in the bottom half of the sixth, adding three more runs to their totals. After loading the bases with one out,
Pembroke brought home
Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY) on a sacrifice fly to right field. Then
Tufano added to his outstanding day, ripping a single up the middle to bring home two more runs.
Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY) had his third consecutive scoreless outing in relief to begin the season to seal the Dowling victory.
Tufano finished 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while
Pembroke added a line of 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI to lead the Dowling offense.
Frank Intagliata also picked up his fourth multi-hit game in 5 games to begin the 2010 campaign.
Freshman
Chris Mendoza (Ronkonkoma, NY) picked up the win out of the Golden Lions' bullpen in his first collegiate appearance.
Mendoza threw 4 solid innings, allowing only 4 hits.
Dowling will now head south on their annual trip to Florida. Their first game on the southern swing will be on Friday, March 12 against Nyack.
